There once was a larger community of French-Canadians in New Bedford.
Much of the cultural heritage that they brought to New Bedford has been lost in that city.
The Portuguese and Latino cultures have overwhelmed the previously dominant French, Polish, etc. cultures that once thrived in New Bedford.

Conrad Gauthier born August 8, 1885 - died February 14, 1964 was a song writer and performer, actor, singer and a Quebec folklorist.
Born in Montreal, he was a pioneer of the radio and Quebec folk recordings.
He recorded more than 100 songs and monologues, often with d' Elzéar Hamel, in 1920's.
He is buried in the cemetery Our-Lady-of-Snows of Montreal.
His son Paul-Marcel Gauthier continued his folklore work.
