In the 20th century New Bedford became the third largest textile city in the US. for a while and whaling had become non-existant early on.

The city was to experience huge changes during this century and not often for the better.
pollution from PCB's were a huge disaster to the environment and the clean up will never be finished.

The flip side of the story is that the New Bedford fishing fleet continues to bring in the most money of any port in the USA. Scallops continue to be a big part of the harvest.
