The Union Street Railway served New Bedford and the outlying communities with electric trolleys for many years until buses came to replace them.

"Large rear engine buses like this took the place of the trolleys in 1947.
This photo was taken in front of the Union Street Railway, and Greyhound Bus Terminal on Purchase St at Middle St. back in the day when busses were becoming popular, around 1947 or later.
The New Bedford Hotel can be seen far upper left."

"I rode these buses! On Sunday, they sold all day bus passes for 50 cents. My brothers and I would ride all day to the ends of the lines and back"

"The area was rife with decadence in the1950's with prostitutes, heroin dealers and shadowy figures lurking in the corners."
