1805 Scene Corner Of Water and William Streets

Cart At The Corner Of Front and Hamilton Streets New Bedford
The Hill in Front Is Burial Point - Now Hamilton and Centre Streets

This scene is an example of how the city has changed dramatically.

If you were on this same site today, you would have no idea where to find the same reference points. This old picture is looking to the west, up the hill from the Acushnet river.

Hamilton Street and Centre Street have been used as a commercial district for many years, and throughout the whaling days there were businesses there that were involved in ship supply etc.

They were supporting the industry.

The shops outfitted the many ships that went on commercial cargo runs as well as fishing. The big money makers were the whaling ships.

At different points in time, the buildings there have been in disrepair and at other times well kept.
This link is to a page showing Centre Street in Disrepair in the 1800's.

The second picture down on this page is Hamilton Street in 2010 looking east.
The third image down is a current street map for a reference. It shows a larger area than the top image.
The view is with North at the top.
